The Glenrothes has launched The 42, a limited release single malt whisky that has been inspired by the colour and character of the distillery’s Highland home.

The 42-year-old spirit is a union of hand-selected casks of The Glenrothes Single Malt that have matured for more than four decades on The Glenrothes Estate.

And it would probably take the average person just as long to save up for a bottle: only 1,134 are available worldwide and they will set you back £6,750. Each.

However if you have just won the lottery and want to celebrate with a dram, The 42 is available in the UK from 15 March from Fortnum & Mason, Harrods and The Whisky Shop.

The 42 is the first of its age to be released by The Glenrothes and is bottled at 43% ABV.

Master Whisky Maker Laura Rampling selected the spirit from just four casks that she judged to have reached a pinnacle of flavour, producing a liquid that “reflects the changing colours of the Rothes landscape and shines through in the vibrant flavour profile of the whisky”. The terrain is also represented on the colourful, contoured packaging that houses the spirit.

Commenting on the new release, Laura Rampling said: “This 42-year-old whisky epitomises the character of The Glenrothes distillery. These four casks have taken our spirit on a journey of maturation over more than four decades, refining the original delicate and fruity character of our new make spirit without overpowering it. Part science, part alchemy and a little bit of magic, the result is a beautifully elegant whisky that truly allows the bright and vibrant character of The Glenrothes to sing.”
